Family video games are the new reasons for families to get together once a week for a family game night. The age of the casual gamer is upon us thanks to the Nintendo Wii. More and more families are keeping their board games in the closet and gathering around their big flat panel TV that is hooked up to their gaming console of choice.
Games like the wildly popular Wii Sports or Wii Fit are getting families together because the games involve physical activity instead of mere button mashing. Other games like Guitar Hero and Rock Band which simulate you playing guitars, drums and singing have dominated the gaming market as a big family favorite.
It’s the level of interactiveness between the game and it’s players that have helped to propel video games in general to out sell movies in terms of sales. Video games have finally reached the acceptance of main stream society thanks to the appeal the games have for the family. No longer is the video game market dominated by the young teenage boy demographic.
The whole family is involved and that is perhaps the most exciting thing about playing video games now. I grew up a gamer and I know from personal experience that I would have loved it if my family had an interest in what game I was playing or what was the latest level I had completed. It was just looked upon as some silly button pushing game that held no value to anyone else in the house but us kids.
Now I have my own kids and family and it’s amazing to me when my parents or even grandparents come over and they ask to turn on one of the systems we have to play the latest Rock Band with the kids. My how times have changed.
