It looks like the online gaming community just got a huge confirmation from the online ad giant Google that the gaming community is a viable place to start placing advertisements. The announcement of the beta release for the new advertising engine called Adsense for Gaming was really not a big surprise since it was only a year ago that Google purchased the online gaming advertising company Adscape for $23 million. So this was only a matter of time but the fact that it is here now is a big shot in the arm for gaming as they have now been targeted as a genuine advertising market that will be tapped into.
Now Google is not the first to enter the online gaming ad market but they are the biggest by far bringing their massive library of clients and online ad experience. Some of their better known rivals in this market are Double Fusion and IGA Worldwide both of which have stated how pleased they are that a major player like Google is bringing some national attention to how much potential the online gaming community holds for all forms of media ads. Both companies as well as online gaming sites like Zynga, Konami and Playfish are all on board with the beta to start incorporating gaming ads.
Now here’s the trick for this to really work as I see it. Gamers in general are passionate about their games and the overall experience the game environment holds for them. So the actual placement of these ads will be key because the gaming community are very vocal and loyal to games and their environment. So if they are able to blend in their ads and not disrupt the gaming experience. If you disrupt my gaming fun time online that will certainly be the end of my game time and any chance of us gamers clicking on your ads.
I have heard some very stark differences of opinion when it comes to in game advertising. Some gamers seem to enjoy a well placed ad in their game as it makes it easier to relate the game to real life and all the ads we are bombarded with on a daily basis. Others of course would prefer that you keep the ads off the game and they have no place in the gaming world.
I have read that starting out Google is targeting the flash technology and all the online flash games that are played everyday. I don’t think I will mind an ad here or there in between my levels of Bejeweled or Frogger as long as they keep it to a minimum. Hear that Google don’t get carried away with this stuff and ruin any of our games. I suppose this is only the first step for Google as well, I can only imagine them trying to invade other forms of gaming like the PC or the consoles.
